Happiness is not a destination. It is a state of being. It is important to reach inner peace, contentment, fulfilment and happiness for a better quality of life, a longer and healthier life, more excitement and more success. Happy people live longer, feel better, function better and are more productive. You are more likely to reach your potential in all areas of your life if you are happy and positive.

By following my model and the recipe I created, I will teach you how to increase your sense of happiness, learn how to send positive messages to your brain and smile all the your way to your success.

Why S.M.I.L.E™?

Isn’t smiling just awesome? A smile can pull you out of a negative state of mind quickly and leaves your face looking good at the same time. When you fake a grin for a few minutes, even though you might not feel like smiling, it will turn into a genuine smile or even a belly laugh.

The only thing you need is to have the intention and desire to smile. At the very least you’ll end up laughing at your own grin. It’s so powerful! Try it out but do it justice and give it a couple of minutes. It’s been a strategy of mine for as long as I remember. Even through the toughest of circumstances, I still managed to smile. As I got older and wiser I started to become aware of my own thoughts, feelings and emotions. This lead to infecting others with my smile.

I remember being told off by my mum but instead of being present and listening during the “telling off”, I was far away staring and smiling. Looking back now I remember it was because I used to slow down her reactions and facial expressions, look at everything and listen in slow motion. You’d be amazed how funny an angry person can look when you analyse their features in slow motion. I was in charge of my reaction to the “telling off” just as you are in charge of your reactions to everything in life.

You can’t control what other people do but you can control and choose your reactions. I chose funny. It didn’t help my cause much at the time but serves me well now. You can imagine how pleased most parents would be if their child grinned in their face during disciplining.

Many things are going on behind a smile. These include the thoughts that we think, the emotions we experience, the choices we make, what we focus on and that’s when the beaming smile happens. Thoughts float around in our heads all day long. We choose to do something with a handful of them. The thoughts we choose to do something with influence our emotions and the emotions we experience influence the behaviours we display and the outcome we get.

Choose a nice happy thought and you’ll smile. Choose a horrible thought and you’ll feel bad, frown or even grumble. You might even growl! My children developed a wonderful growl which they learnt from me before I had developed better strategies.

Let’s look at what happens behind a smile. How can we smile every day? It’s simple but not always easy. Choose nice thoughts over horrible ones, happy thoughts over sad ones and do or say nice things.

There are five simple steps to a happy life. I promise that by the end of this book you will know how to smile every day regardless of what life throws at you. You will be able to change perspective, put yourself in other people’s shoes and look at situations from a completely different angle. Once you recognise your story from somebody else’s, you will be on an enjoyable and exciting life journey.

I remember it clearly. I hopped out of bed one morning, grabbed a sheet of paper, a pencil and a rubber and started drawing and writing. I came up with the five simple steps to live a happy life, all encompassed within a smile. I looked at how I had succeeded through dire circumstances and that’s how I developed the model which I share with you in this book.

That’s how my S.M.I.L.E™ model was born: in my pyjamas on a quiet Saturday morning. When a nice thought popped into my head, I grabbed it with both hands.
